The research group of Marine and Environmental Geology of the University of Vigo (GEOMA) is composed of 6 professors from the Vigo and Ourense campuses with wide experience in the areas they are assigned.
Although GEOMA was constituted as a research group in 1999, its roots go back to the years 1993 and 1996, initially within in the Department of Natural Resources and Environment and later on in the Department of Marine Geosciences and Territorial Organization.
Sedimentology, physical properties of sediments, petrology, geochemical characterization, thematic cartographies, high resolution seismic, hydrodynamics and sedimentary dynamics, environmental impact, acoustic techniques and sediment sampling, environmental magnetism, paleomagnetism, magnetostratigraphy.
Evolution of the climate in the last 30 to 200 k years (Global Change) and its implications for the assessment of Global Warming and climatic variability.
ITCZ, integral management of the coastal area: environmental impact, coastal engineering, pollution, with special emphasis on the understanding of the integral dynamics of the Galician Rias.
Prospection of geological resources.
Hydrogeology.
Hidrogeología.
Advanced geophysical prospecting techniques (seismic acoustic, magnetic and electrical) and the acquisition and analysis of geochemical data; techniques of acquisition, analysis, processing and numerical modeling of waves and transport conditions in marine sedimentary environment.
These techniques are being applied to problems of pollution, sedimentological management and modeling in this type of environment, coastal engineering and obtaining paleoclimatic records during the last 50,000 years.
The available infraestructure of GEOMA consists its own equipment and large equipment and facilities belonging to the University of Vigo or connected to the Campus del Mar and based in the Vigo area.
Moreover, several members of the group have strong experience in planning and executing marine expeditions and lead oceanographic expeditions in large vessel such as the BIO Hesperiedes, Sarmiento de Gamboa and Mytilus, as well as regular sea expeditions in their vessel Inndaga.
